What is Clean Energy Network NY program?

Clean Energy Network NY is a "targeted demand side management" program implemented by Comverge, Inc. that invites commercial customers of Con Edison in select neighborhoods to retrofit their lighting system—from bulbs to ballasts—to save money on their electric bills and reduce strain on New York's electricity system.

What is the relationship between Clean Energy Network NY and Con Edison?

Clean Energy Network NY is a program administered by Public Energy Solutions (PES), a wholly owned subsidiary of Comverge, Inc. PES has a multi-year contract, awarded by Con Edison in February 2008, to install lighting and other energy efficiency technologies in selected Manhattan electric networks. PES also has contracts, awarded in October 2006 and May 2007, to offer the Con Edison Targeted Demand Side Management Program in selected Westchester County locations.

Where can I find information on the Con Edison program?

To find information on the Con Edison Targeted Demand Side Management program, just visit Con Edison’s Targeted Demand Side Management Web page: www.coned.com/energyefficiency/targetedDSM.asp

Will my utility company change after enrolling with Clean Energy Network NY?

No. Con Edison has contracted with Comverge, Inc. to provide you with these services. Your contract with Comverge in no way affects your relationship with Con Edison or your energy supplier, which will remain unchanged.

How can I enroll in the Clean Energy Network NY program?

Any qualifying commercial or industrial business customer of Con Edison in Lower Manhattan or Westchester County is eligible for our free lighting audit. To determine if your facility qualifies and to schedule your free lighting audit, call your Clean Energy Network NY representative at 866-818-1900 or complete our online form at www.Comverge.com/CEN-NY.

How does the program work?

After you have enrolled, we will send a Clean Energy Network NY representative to your facility to conduct a free lighting audit. Clean Energy Network NY will install any new lights and ballasts recommended in the audit. The audit will determine energy andcost savings, including return on investment (ROI), and any cost you will assume. Con Edison will send a representative both before and after the installation to verify the wattage and location of equipment upgraded through the program. Alternatively, Clean Energy Network NY will provide you with the hardware and you can choose to do the installation yourself. You can also earn rebate incentives if you purchase and install your own energy efficientlighting technology, such as lamps, ballasts, etc.

Will it cost me anything to participate?

We will conduct a lighting audit of your facility totally free of charge. We will then provide you with a Project Summary sheet, reflecting the results from the lighting audit, detailing your total projected electricity and lighting cost savings, total cost for the project, our contribution to the projected costs, and your net out-of-pocket expenses—currently expected to be a small percentage of total costs.

Can I participate in both the NYSERDA & Clean Energy Network NY programs?

New York State rules do not allow you to receive rebate dollars from both the NYSERDA & Clean Energy Network NY programs for the same energy-efficient lighting technology installed.

If the New York Authority is my energy supplier, can I participate in the program?

Yes, but the incentive is significantly reduced. Contact us for more details.

If, after receiving subsidies, I also outlay a percentage of the total cost, when will I see a return on my investment?

Comverge, Inc. has been providing energy conservation services for over 17 years throughout the country, with campaigns across Westchester, Brooklyn, Queens, and parts of Manhattan. We can confidently say from experience, over 80% of lighting projects see a return on investment in less than one year!

Can I really make a difference by participating?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, by retrofitting your current incandescent lighting system to compact fluorescents (CFLs), you can reduce your lighting energy consumption by 75% over the lifetime of your CFL bulbs. Plus, because CFLs produce 75% less heat than incandescent bulbs, your facility will require less air conditioner cooling in the summer, resulting in additional energy conservation and financial savings. Our Project Summary sheet will itemize your actual kilowatt reduction (kWr). www.Energy.gov.

As a business tenant, am I eligible to enroll?

If you are the account holder for Con Edison’s electric bill for your facility, and your business facility is located within the approved territory, you are eligible for this program. Please review your tenant lease terms for any exceptions.

How will I know if the people who arrive to perform the lighting audit/upgrade are legitimate?

We can understand your concern for security. Rest assured that auditing, installation, and final inspection will only be done by qualified, certified professionals working on behalf of Clean Energy Network NY or Con Edison. When our auditors or installers arrive, they should be carrying a card identifying themselves as authorized contractors for Con Edison.

Do I have to be on the premises during installation?

Yes, we will need you or your representative on site so that our personnel will be able to audit and install with minimal disruption to your enterprise.

If, during installation, any damage occurs to my lighting system or any other machinery or equipment within my facility, who will cover the cost to fix it?

Installation will be done by qualified and certified professionals working on behalf of the Clean Energy Network NY program. They are well trained and will carry appropriate liability insurance.

Can you make energy efficiency recommendations in addition to lighting?

While lighting is a significant factor, it’s not our only focus. We can help you decrease energy demand and consumption through upgrades to energy-intensive building systems. Our experts focus on designing, developing, and implementing energy efficient strategies that will directly benefit your bottom line—immediately and for the long term. Potential areas for upgrades include:

  • HVAC systems
  • Motors and pumps
  • Cooling and refrigeration systems
Are the bulbs you install the same quality as my current bulbs, and will they last as long as what I currently have?

According to EnergySavers.gov, you can save almost $50 annually by replacing just one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL). CFLs use 75% less energy and last about 10 times longer than the incandescent bulb you are likely still using. Qualified bulbs labeled “warm white” or “soft white” produce light like typical incandescent light bulbs. CFLs that have a cooler color (similar to bright white incandescent bulbs) are usually labeled “bright white” or “daylight” on the product packaging.

Are the mercury levels in the CFL bulbs harmful?

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing—an average of 5 milligrams (roughly equivalent to the tip of a ball-point pen). Mercury is an essential, irreplaceable element in any fluorescent lighting and is what allows the bulb to be an efficient light source. By comparison, older home thermometers contain 500 milligrams of mercury and many manual thermostats contain up to 3,000 milligrams. It would take between 100 and 600 CFLs to equal those amounts. Because there is such a small amount of mercury in CFLs, your greatest risk if a bulb should break (any bulb) is getting cut from glass shards. Research indicates that there is no immediate health risk to you or your customers should a bulb break and it’s cleaned up properly. You can minimize any risks by following these proper clean-up and disposal guidelines:

  1. Sweep up ─ don’t vacuum ─ all of the glass fragments and fine particles.
  2. Place broken pieces in a sealed bag and wipe the area with a damp paper towel to pick up any stray shards of glass or fine particles. Put the used towel in the plastic bag as well.
Where do I go to obtain replacement bulbs when my warranty is over?

When installation is complete, we will provide you with a supply of replacement bulbs. Should you need any bulbs after your warranty expiration, we invite you to call our Customer Service department at 866-818-1900 and a representative will provide you with information on direct purchases.

How does Clean Energy Network NY recycle old equipment?

When we remove fluorescent tubes and ballasts containing PCBs, they are sent to our recycling partner, Veolia Environmental Services (VES), which utilizes state-of-the-art recycling technologies to recover and re-use a wide variety of materials. They perform lamp recycling, PCB ballast recycling, and mercury reclamation to ensure all lighting materials are treated in an eco-friendly manner.
